What to Wear to a Vintage Fashion Fair – The 1940’s Fashion Blues

The date has been penciled in your diary for months, you have diligently been stashing away your precious pennies in spending preparation, the pin curls are setting…. it is vintage fashion fair time!!! But, what to wear???  If this question brings a slight panic to you, know you are not alone!

It can be very daunting, a whole fair dedicated to vintage fashion, full of immaculately dressed bettys and dapper gents just waiting to see what fashion choices you have made for the occasion!
But, it is also a very fun time! As for me, it means everyone goes all out and the event is more like a social fashion parade and get together of all the fabulous like minded people I know!

I chose a beautiful 1943 vintage reproduction, from my own collection. The darla in the soft blue/grey color. I like to style my outfits with 3 colors, but with just one main color tome, and so decided on a navy vintage hat, navy vintage bag and of course… navy shoes to match!

My hat had the little tufts of red flowers that matched my lipstick, so I decided to also take my new red umbrella that is trimmed in navy! Lucky as I needed it for the sun, not the rain!

To finish the look I decided, last minute, that my outfit was not complete without a scarf! Even though it is approaching winter the actual temperature was more like a summer’s day! But, it seemed like a good idea at the time! It definitely did get a little hot under the collar though! In lieu of a scarf ring ( this is on my shopping list!) I used a gold bow brooch to tie in with the gold tones of my jewelry and the scarf.

Perfect color matching to satisfy my outfit OCD!

Dress – Darla from Evelyn Wood Vintage Fashion House
Hat – 1940’s vintage
Bag – Vintage
Scarf – Thrifted
Umbrella – gifted

I find some of my favourite outfits run with a very close color scheme, 3 colors total, but with one main one, like with the blue, red and gold above.
If you try this too, let me know in the comments below! I would love to know how you make your colors work!

  • I love the bow brooch on the scarf, such a lovely touch, I have so many vintage scarves and brooches but I never get the chance to wear them because of the heat. I also find vintage fashion fairs a bit daunting when it comes to deciding what to wear as it’s not everyday one gets to be around so many other well dressed people wearing vintage and vintage inspired outfits. I definitely felt overwhelmed at the Sydney vintage fair I went to last year! One thing I’ve noticed about these fairs is that it always gets pretty hot inside due to the large numbers of people so I normally opt for a light dress when I go!

    • Oh yes Harlow, it is such a pain lately to try to wear all the pretty things in the heat! I find, I put it on, get hot instantly, and have to take it off! Yes I always tend to wear things on the cooler side, and easy to change in and out of to fairs too! As daunting as It might be I have no doubt the outfit you choose was as spectacular as ever 🙂
