In this video, I will explain what the bias of fabric grain is, why it is important and how you can find the bias direction on fabric, to use either for the grain on sewing patterns or maybe to cut bias strips for your sewing projects!!!
If you don't know what straight grain is, go now and learn that sewing term first! As they all build on one other!
The bias grain is the directional grain of the fabric. The true bias is 45 degree angle to the selvage, which means that it is also 45 degree angle to the straight grain of the fabric.
What is bias ?
It is the directional grain of the fabric. The true bias is 45 degree angle to the selvage.
The bias grain has a natural stretch to it and if often used for slinky fabrics and evening wear. If you pattern is designed to be on the bias, it will be shown on the pattern.
NOTE - you cant 'just decide' to change the grain line on a pattern. If it is designed on the bias, you need to cut it on the bias, if you instead cut it on straight grain the garment will not fit correctly! And vice versa!
More is explained in the video, I hope this sheds some light on the bias for you!
Until next time...

Beautiful and educative videos. Very clear. God bless you and your School. Looking forward to seeing video on how and where to measure in the body.
Thank you for watching and thankyou for the video suggestion!
So there are two true possible biases ….? Because there are two ways the 45 angle can run in relation to the selvage? Or is there only one true bias? I am a bit confused…..does it matter which way the pattern piece lies as long as it runs along 45 degree angle? I see two possible ways it could be placed….
